چکیده

We use ab initio pseudopotential total energy calculations with a plane wave basis set to investigate the structural energetics of various phases of polymorphic NbN. Particular attention is given to its recently discovered superconducting phase with a Tc of 16.4 K, reported to have the NbO structure type. Results of total energy calculations show that it is in fact energetically unfavorable for NbN to form in this cubic structure, and its predicted theoretical lattice constant is significantly smaller than the experimental value. Various approaches to the identification of an alternative structure are discussed. In preliminary investigations, we have found two new structures that are energetically more favorable than the NbO structure. 61.50.Lt, 74.70.Ad Typeset using REVTEX

Metastability of NbN in the ordered vacancy NbO phase.

A metastable phase of NbN with superconducting T c =16.4 K was reported recently by Treece and collaborators. The reported structure of the thin film sample deviates from the rocksalt (B1) NbN structure with 25% ordered vacancies on each sublattice (space group Pm3m) and a lattice constant of 4.442Å. Using full potential electronic structure methods, we contrast the electronic structure with th...

Hexagonal-structured ε-NbN: ultra-incompressibility, high shear rigidity, and a possible hard superconducting material

Exploring the structural stability and elasticity of hexagonal ε-NbN helps discover correlations among its physical properties for scientific and technological applications. Here, for the first time, we measured the ultra-incompressibility and high shear rigidity of polycrystalline hexagonal ε-NbN using ultrasonic interferometry and in situ X-ray diffraction, complemented with first-principles ...

Optical Investigation of ultra-thin NbN films for phonon-cooled Hot-Electron-Bolometers (HEB)

We investigate ultra-thin NbN films by means of spectroscopic ellipsometry and Raman spectroscopy. These measurements give important information on thickness dependent structural properties and phonon density of states. Thus first steps towards a microscopic understanding of the physics of phonons in these films and their coupling to the substrate can be made. As an ultimate goal we search to r...

The structural origin of the unusual compression behaviors in nanostructured TiO2: insights from first-principles calculations.

First-principles calculations of anatase structured TiO2 and ZrO2 as well as of TiO2-B were carried up to 20 GPa in order to develop an understanding of the unusual compression and pressure-dependent phase transitions reported for nanocrystalline (nc) pure and Zr-doped anatase and nc TiO2-B. The computations, carried out using two global hybrid density functional-Hartree-Fock formulations and a...
